research experiences for undergraduates

Posted: 31 ene 2013
Due: see web page.

It's REU season! Many of you already are planning your summer research experiences for undergraduates, and we know you're eager to share these with the community. We'd like to help you do that by recommending you post your REU opportunities to the dedicated, free, and public list designed just for this purpose:

CRA's Undergraduate Research Positions in Computer Science: http://cra.org/ccc/csurge-opportunities.php

We're very excited that CRA has made this platform available. It gives faculty a place to share opportunities with the very audience that needs to hear about them (students), and it gives students a single, comprehensive place to search for REUs. So rather than share REUs through this email list, NCWIT encourages you to share them at the CRA website. As an added service to our members, we will regularly publicize member REUs from the CRA site through NCWIT's social media channels.

Funding to attend a workshop

Posted: 18 ene 2013
Due: mar 1 2013

Security research is a great field that has not attracted women and minorities in any great numbers, despite the wonderful opportunities available.  We'd like to change that --- and so does NSF, CRA-W/CDC, and Microsoft (among others).  We're pleased to announce GREPSEC, a computer security workshop for women and underrepresented groups.  Come and learn about why great minds are drawn to security.

GREPSEC is a day-and-a-half-long workshop scheduled for May 18-19, 2013 in San Francisco, occurring just prior to the annual IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy.  The workshop will consist of a number of talks by leading academic and industry researchers in computer security.  (A list of speakers may be found at: http://www.ieee-security.org/grepsec/schedule.html.) The workshop will include a number of research talks as well as panels looking at research from various perspectives including information assurance from a hardware and software point of view, picking good research problems, and privacy from both a policy and technical perspective.  There will be breaks to afford students time to meet informally with the speakers.

Funding for this meeting has been provided by the US National Science Foundation, a grant from CRA-W/CDC, and Microsoft Research, and travel funding will be available for graduate students at US institutions.  If space permits, we may admit some advanced undergraduates.

Application information can be found at: http://www.ieee-security.org/grepsec/apply.html .  Applications are due March 1. Applicants will be informed by April 1 whether they have been admitted and the size of their travel award.  Workshop participants will be encouraged to attend the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy meeting, which will begin on May 19.  We regret that workshop travel funding cannot cover participation in the IEEE Symposium.

If you have questions about the workshop, please direct them to one of Susan (susan.landau@privacyink.org), Hilarie (hilarie@purplestreak.com), or Terry (tbenzel@isi.edu). We encourage all eligible students to apply.

SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS

Posted: 31 ene 2013
DueFeb 15 2013.

SUMMER 2013
PAID SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS FOR UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS
via CRA-W/CDC DREU
(DREU was known as the DMP from 1994-2008)

Application Deadline February 15, 2013

The CRA-W/CDC Distributed Research Experiences for Undergraduates (DREU)
Program matches promising undergraduates with a faculty mentor for a
summer research experience at the faculty member's home institution.
The objective of the DREU is to increase the number of women and
students from underrepresented groups, including ethnic minorities
and persons with disabilities, entering graduate studies in the fields
of computer science and engineering. The DREU experience is invaluable
for students who are considering graduate school, providing them with a
close-up view of what graduate school is really like and also increasing
their competitiveness as an applicant for graduate admissions and
fellowships.

Funding for the student consists of $6000 for the summer (10 weeks),
plus relocation travel assistance when appropriate. Additional funds
may be available to support student conference travel, either during
the summer or afterward, and for outreach activities promoting the DREU.

An on-line Application for students and faculty mentors, more
information about DREU, and webpages authored by previous participants
are available at:
http://parasol.tamu.edu/dreu/
Application Deadline: February 15, 2013
Awards Announced: mid-March 2013

Notes for faculty mentors regarding the DREU Program:

* Cost sharing by faculty mentors is encouraged. The number of students
interested in the DREU program has increased substantially over the last
several years. To enable more students to participate, faculty are now
encouraged to provide funds to support (partially or fully) students;
the DREU will provide travel support for all students.

* All interested faculty are eligible to be DREU mentors. All interested
faculty are encouraged to apply as mentors. Nonetheless, based on the
documented benefits of role models with similar gender or from similar
demographic groups, it is anticipated that DREU funds will mostly be
used to support students matched with mentors from groups
underrepresented in computing. Hence, other mentors applying should
attempt to provide full funding for their students' stipends (the
program will provide travel support).

For more information about the DREU, consult the DREU webpages
http://parasol.tamu.edu/dreu/
or contact the DREU Co-Directors at dreu@cse.tamu.edu

Summer Program

Summer Program in Quantitative Sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health

June 1 – July 2, 2013 (dates are not yet finalized and are subject to change)

Website for Eligibility & Requirements:

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/biostats/diversity/summer/

Deadline for Application: February 15, 2013

If you like mathematics and would like to learn how quantitative methods can be applied in the study of human health, then the Summer Program in Quantitative Sciences is for you.  The Summer Program will introduce you to the power and excitement of math applications to public health, medicine, and biology, and possibly convince you that this is the career direction you've been looking for!

The Summer Program is an intensive program, during which highly qualified undergraduates receive a whirlwind introduction to the fields of biostatistics and epidemiology and to the use of quantitative methods for biological, environmental, public health, and medical research. The program also provides advice about graduate school and the application process through GRE preparation, meetings with different departments of the Harvard School of Public Health, and individualized mentoring by Harvard faculty.

Participants take non-credit introductory courses in biostatistics and STATA (a statistical program), and attend a series of afternoon topical seminars. The seminars, led by faculty members from various departments at the Harvard School of Public Health, are designed to broaden participant's understanding of the relationship of biostatistics to human health by providing a snapshot of methods developed and applied to real research projects in different fields.

Participants also gain research experience through small-group research projects directed by faculty and graduate student mentors.  Students apply statistical methods to real data to address important and timely questions.  For example, one group of students recently studied whether there was a relationship between body mass index and postpartum depression. Another research project examined the effects of arsenic exposure on proteomic profiles in Bangladesh.  At the end of the program, students present their research to the group and to affiliated faculty.

Alumni of the Summer Program have earned or are enrolled in graduate degrees in many campuses over the country, including Masters or PhDs in Biostatistics and Epidemiology.

Potential applicants should have some aptitude and interest in quantitative methods and an interest in public health as a career.  Prior exposure to statistics is not required.   Housing and travel are provided and a living stipend of approximately $1500/month is provided.  Please email any questions to:  bio

US Dept. of Enerty FAST program The Faculty and Student Teams (FaST) Program is a cooperative effort between the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Faculty from colleges and universities with limited research facilities, and from those institutions serving populations underrepresented in the fields of science, engineering, and technology (including women and minorities), are encouraged to apply for the FaST program. The FaST program supports teams comprised of one faculty member and 2 – 3 undergraduate students, who undertake hands-on research at DOE National Laboratories during the summer months. The FaST faculty applicant (students do not apply directly) works collaboratively with the FaST program manager at an individual DOE National Laboratory to identify a mutually beneficial research area amenable to collaboration between the applicant and a Laboratory research scientist. This link provides Project Descriptions from specific DOE Office of Science Laboratories in a previous year, which can serve as a guideline for consideration of possible research areas. However, the web pages maintained by the individual Laboratories, which detail the ongoing research efforts at each institution, are the ultimate guide which determines what collaborative efforts could be considered. Blue Waters Undergraduate Petascale Internship Program

We are actively recruiting undergraduate faculty and students:

We are actively recruiting undergraduate faculty and students: · Undergraduate faculty who would like to mentor an undergraduate student in a year-long internship in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics that involves teaching or researching the use of high-performance computing in studying problems in these fields. · Undergraduate students interested in participating in a year-long science or engineering internship. Students must be enrolled as undergraduates through Spring 2012 at a U.S. degree-granting institution.

Support is provided by the NSF-funded Blue Waters Project for sustained petascale computing to support year-long undergraduate internship experiences involving the application of high-performance computing to problems in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics. The program provides a student stipend totaling $5000, a two-week intensive high-performance computing workshop, and travel to the SC11 supercomputing conference in Seattle.

This program provides support for undergraduate internship activities at any accredited degree granting institution in the United States. The internships awarded through this program may be to students working with a faculty mentor on their home campus, or at another campus. Interested faculty need tocreate a position description through our site, and can specify a particular student that the position is intended for, or may select a qualified applicant with Blue Waters support through our program.

Promotional Material: A PowerPoint slide is available to let students know about the program (if your browser or e-mail client appends a “.doc” suffix to this file, you will need to remove that suffix to open the file with PowerPoint). In addition, poster-sized and handout-sized flyers are available (in pdf format) to inform students and colleagues about this program.

When: Student applications and intern position descriptions from faculty must be submitted by March 31, 2011. Be sure to click the “Submit” button at the bottom of the web form to be entered into our system. Review and selection will be conducted in early April, with notifications being made by April 15. A two-week workshop will be held May 29 through June10. Interns are expected to work full-time over the Summer, and as their schedule allows during the academic year. Work plans will need to be arranged by the student and faculty mentor, and approved by the Blue Waters Undergraduate Petascale Education Program.

How: Through our website:

Faculty should create descriptions of undergraduate internship positions they have available, indicating either that the position is intended for a particular student applicant, or that it is open to qualified applicants. ·

Eligible undergraduate students are asked to submit an application for consideration. There is an area on the form where students can identify a faculty member as a mentor. Students who have taken the initiative to arrange an internship with a faculty mentor are more likely to be selected for this program than students that have not. -- Jeff Krause, Ph.D., jeff.krause@shodor.org Shodor: A national resource for computational science education 300 W.
